Rwanda experienced a growing number of disasters in recent decades, causing physical, social and economic
damages and losses. The best known amongst these disasters are droughts that occurred in 1989, 2000, 2005-
2006 and 2014; the devastating landslides that occurred in 1988, 2006, 2010 and 2011 mainly in the northern and
western provinces; the ever increasing floods across the country, the earthquake of 2008; and the windstorms that constantly hit different parts of the country.
